Peggy’s Cove Wilderness Area

Peggy’s Cove is one of Nova Scotia’s most popular areas, known mostly for its lighthouses and at time huge waves. But there are many places to explore throughout the entire area.

Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse

The first lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove was built in 1868. The Beacon (or lamp) was powered by kerosene and was magnified by a catoptric reflector, which is essentially a silver plated mirror. The light was red and would guide ships who had spent weeks at sea, to safer shores.

In 1914, the first lighthouse was replaced by one made of concrete. The new one stands 15 metres high. The old wooden lighthouse eventually became a place for the keeper to dwell.

The original lighthouse was removed after being damaged by Hurricane Edna in 1954, then in 1958 the new lighthouse was automated, meaning there was no longer a need for keepers.

Previously, the lighthouse contained a small Canada Post office which served locals and visitors during the summer months. Canada Post eventually closed the location due safety concerns. The lighthouse was designated as surplus by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2010.

Wild Adventures

This area is between Highway 102 and Kearney Lake Road. It can be accessed from Hogan Court and is extremely difficult to hike. There were some cool patterns in the vegetation and stones too.

Kearney Lake Blue Mountain Trail

Across from the stone quarry and lake is one of many entrances to the Blue Mountain Wilderness Area. All of the map signs have been modified so you can’t tell where you are. When I was here the GPS on my phone stopped working and I lost cell coverage. This area is in the middle of HRM.
